NEW DESIGNS:

Thank you Jan Mott (Crane Design) for creating this lovely ditty bag design. Jan'scolors are wonderful and so is she. I see nothing but fun with this one.

Here is another cutie by Jan. What a wonderful addition to your primitive decor....useful too.

OLD CLASSICS:

This is the time of the year when I like to revisit my personal pattern collection and pull out the "classics"....ones that I hope to do this year....can you hear me laughing....okay, wishful thinking, BUT at least its a plan. :-)

I love the penny ornaments. Think of how cute these would be on a white feather tree. Pattern is by "Under The Garden Moon." I am currently making store models and selling this pattern in my retail shop.

An absolute must for the wall in my retail shop. I have devised a plan to fill the walls in the store with framed pattern pieces. At least one a month.....I will do my best.

This is beyond cool, however I suffer from punchphobia! LOL. Well, it not as bad as it sounds. I have done punchneedle, but everytime I look at a pattern, I see wool applique and so I plan to tweak this one into an applique piece. I love the colors (by pattern designer Shawn Williams of Threads that Bind) and will go with this color palette when selecting my wool fabric.

Can you guess the designer? I am going to make this for my home....one day.

I love this classice design by Primitive Gatherings. It reminds me of how I got so excited when I discovered the world of wool applique and in the beginning I was sewing a lot of pennies....good memories :-)

I want make this piece as a store model and display behind the counter. I like to think big so hopefully this will play out. lol

And this classic gem sums it all up for me. The pattern is by All Through The Night and the title is...."It a Wonderful World".

NEW VALERIE:

Yes, that right....new Valerie. I am referring to the sometimes stubborn woman who has come to the realization of how she needs to take care of her back issues. I have dealt with a degenerative disc (the last disc) in my lower back for the past two years. I know how to manage the pain, but it can get out of hand at times. Prescribed excercise is the key, but I've discovered that with my travels to Waynesville (45 min one way) that all of the sitting in the car is now adding up to some major pain. So I've promised my loving, supportive husband that I will cut back on a few of my activities. However, that was just completely painful to think about....where do I cut back. I love my shop, I love the Mercantile, I love to blog, I love to run my Etsy Shop, and I love to stitch my wool applique pieces. I held fast in remaing stubborn about change, but now the pain is speaking loud and clear and so I am being smart, changing, and following the sensible advise of my loving husband.

MY SOLUTIONS:

1. More of this and less sitting in the car.

I am trying not to laugh as I post this picture.....but its all real and if you suffer from any type of back pain due to past injuries or just everyday wear and tear, then I highly recommend managing your pain this way. My pain managment doctor gave me a good list of back excercises follow and they do work, if you stick with it.

2. Stand and Stitch:

This may look a bit odd but it is a help for me in keeping my stitching going. The picture above is of a rectangle basket turned upside down on my desk. I made a soft, flannel fabric topper for it. I then place my "camper" sized pillow on top of the basket. This puts my sewing project at the right height for stitching so that I am not tempted to sit, and the bonus is that the pillow turns into one big pincushion as I change needles and floss along the way. I've been stitching this way for a while and it does not bother me to stand since I am pain-free on my feet.

3. Necessary change in store hours:

I think this will be fine as the busiest days in the little village of Waynesville is Thursday through Saturday. Wish me luck because if I had my way, I would be open more. But life sometimes has a way of directing what one does. I am just grateful that I can still keep all going, but also have to be willing not to be so stubborn in accepting certain changes.

NEW FLOSS LINE (at least for me)

Comso Multiwork 2 strand Floss

I've come across (through my distributor) a fantastic line of what I kiddingly call "TIME MANAGEMENT" threads. Eighty percent of the time (for my applique work) I use two strands of DMC floss for stitching. I love DMC's color assortment, but sometimes I get frustrated with splitting the floss from six strands down to two strands.

So another option (as pictured above) is Cosmo Multiwork two-strand floss which comes in beautiful colors. A good selection of colors are offered, but certainly not as many as DMC. I see these little spools lasting quite awhile. It feels fantastic to just pull out what I need and thread the needle. It really does save me lots of time. As soon as I have all threads in stock, I will be sure to list these on Etsy. I currently have a small bowl full in the store. So now for my stitching projects, I use DMC, Valdani Size 12, Aurifil Lana Wool thread and the Cosmo Multiwork..yay!

TWEAK, TWEAK!

When I was going through my patterns, I ran across my Buttermilk Basin stitchery patterns that of course made me want to tweak to wool. Just needs to be stitched and I am itching to use my new Cosmo Floss.

Wooly Progress - TDIPT Birthday Party Prizes

WOOLY PROGRESS

So far, I've been able to stick with my New Year's Resolution of staying focused. Here are a few pics of progress. Most of the projects are not done, but have great potential of completion by the end of this week. Ohh, I hope so. :-)

Still working on Bird mat orders. Last night, I just cutout a fun design by Maggie Bonanomi (hanging heart project) and a wool applique banner by Lily Anna Stitches. I also put together a fun little Valentine pincushion kit last week that is complete. The kit came with the cutest pins. I plan to keep this piece out all year. Tonight I will get to "sit and stitch" OR "stand and stitch"...depending what my back tells me to do. :-)

Same picture but wanted to include the cutout pincushion cats that are hiding under the star pillow and my lamp that I made many years ago.

These little ornaments are my take-along projects for stitching at the store. A fun way to use my time and to keep my focus.

Prims Magazine - Wool Applique Piece

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to share some good news today.

This is my first magazine piece...currently featured in the Winter Issue (2012) of PRIMS Magazine.

This all overwhelms me a bit, yet I am thrilled.

As a member of To Dwell In Primitive Thymes Mercantile, we were invited last year to submit a piece of our work to Prims Magazine as a group. Since our group is large, the publisher decided to split the submissions into two magazine issues...Fall Issue (2011) and the most recent Winter Issue (2012).

All of this occurred last year, so it was a surprise when the magazine arrived shortly before Christmas. I was excited, yet somewhat nevous about all. I absolutely had no idea what to expect. The picture, the layout, everything was in the hands of PRIMS magazine so it was going to be one big surprise.

The first surprise was the big lump I felt in my throat.
I kept staring at the front cover of PRIMS until my husband nudged me out of my stupor with his words..."Valerie....open the magazine....open it sweetheart."

My intellegent response was.........."What?" Eventually, I paged through the magazine and found the article along with the work of the Mercantile artists . It brought a smile to my face as I viewed all ...I have to say.... I am so proud to be a part of this fantastic group.

On a different note.....

YESTERDAY'S PROGRESS. It felt good to have a day to get wooly projects done.

Sweet little pillows, designer Stacy West of Buttermilk Basin, to grace a cupboard or shelf.

I trimmed the pillow with Boucille yarn.

Can you tell by the picture that it took me most of the day for stitching these as it is almost dusk.....the time of day where I really get into motion. :-)

Hi Everyone,

So, its January, and it should be calm.

For me it should be a time to catch up with the store, with orders, with producing store models, and for attending the Marketplace.

I had posted a sign earlier stating that I would reopen January 12th (thinking I would have all of the above jobs mentioned done). So not the case, therefore I've extended my studio time and have closed my tiny shop for the entire month of January. (This is not an uncommon thing to happen during the month of January in little Village of Waynesville).

Anyway, I posted all of this info on my store door last week, but forget to post it on my blog....sew sorry!

To hold myself to task, I will keep posting pictures of what is getting done.

Also, here are my hours for the rest of the year so that there will be no more confusion.

FEB 1st - DEC 31st 2012.

Don't worry, my Christmas decor is out of the store, regardless of the picture. I did get that much done! LOL

I just thought I would share a peek of * BIRD* (a Maggie Bonanomi design from her latest book Buttonwood Farm) that I plan to list this evening on TDIPT Mercantile.

I tweaked this pillow design into a wool applique table mat and used a triangle edging to complete the look. The tiny stitch applique work was done with wool/acrylic thread. The piece measures 24 inches wide x 10.5 inches tall.

I sew appreciate your wooly, wooly funny comments concerning my 2nd Annual Wool Surprise Giveaway. You made this giveway a great time and I am so excited to see who will be the winner tomorrow.

You know about this part of the giveway.....where all the fun lies and I hope you will enjoy all the many beautiful projects in this book. This is one of my favorite Need'l Love books. It truly is "Berry" nice.

SEW......as promised, here are the pictures and descriptions of the complete giveway.

Okay stitching girl friends, here is a small sign to place in your sewing space.

You will receive one fat quarter of Week's Dye Works wool (Lancaster Red) and some nice size pieces of Weeks Begonia, and Kudzu green for your project.

There is another project in this book (pictured above) that I thought would be fun and you will have plenty of wool to complete this one also.

I mentioned in my last post about not "throwing in the towel" (that is giving in and telling you about the whole giveaway) but I guess that was not the truth as you will receive a package of Aunt Martha's Vintage 1930's towels for the above mentioned project.

I am so pround of my self for keeping my lips "buttoned" about this whole giveway. That was my challenge, for certain! :-)

The "snippets" of information, the "seeds" that I threw out there as hints, and sew on are all a part of this giveaway. So let me describe the above picture for you.

1. Patchwork Scissors: I am never, never, never without these scissors. I use them for cutting my wool - freezer paper templates. Also, a handy tool for all the tiny trimming I do with wool applique. Small BUT MIGHTY! (and they never seem to dull)

2. Roxanne's Temporary Glue-Baste It: Great for all of your applique work. Sew handy!

3. Micro Mini Round Black Buttons: Great size for wool applique embellishments. I use them for snowman buttons, flower centers, etc.

4. DMC Floss: I threw in these two skeins of DMC 6-strand embroidery floss for stitching the strawberry projects. You will need the green for attaching the green hull top and black for the berry seeds.

5. Black Seed Beads: I added these to the giveway in case you wanted to try these for the strawberries.

Here is a better picture of the floss you will receive.

Oh yes, and that "basketful" of fun I was hinting about, well you will definitely need a basket for all your stitched strawberries.

Again, I can't believe all of your creative comments. There were some darn good ones....LOL...really good!

Happy New Year Everyone AND Welcome to my 2nd Annual Wool Surprise Giveway.

To start off, I have to admit that I've had all kinds of craziness running through my head over the past couple of weeks concerning this giveaway, but I FINALLY settled down with what I think will be a super fun time.

Yes, you will see bits and pieces of the giveaway (in the pictures to follow) HOWEVER you will not know what project I picked for you or all the supplies and gifts I intend to add to this fun event.

The pictures below will guide you to a conclusion but you will not get to see all of the giveway. The point is to get you thinking and to keep you guessing.

On the very last day (the day before we draw a winning name) I will show you all the pictures including the chosen project .

Hi Everyone,

GRATEFUL: Yes, this is the time of year where we all reflect on who we are, what we are grateful for, and how we can give back to those less fortunate. As I've gotten older, I find myself to be extremely sensitive in knowing that so many people struggle on a daily basis to find ways to feed their families. The thought overwhelms me. This year, I made the committment of donating money monthly to help feed families throughout the year. I choose one charity, a mission here in Cincinnati to donate to. It is amazing to know how much can be done with the small amount I contribute. I figure if I contribute monthly, it all adds up. Small becomes big. I encourage all of you to do the same if possible.

THANKFUL: I am thankful for the blessings God has bestowed upon me....my loving family, new friends, old friends, and YES, new retail neighbors who have been so kind and thoughtful as I adjust to my surroundings in Waynesville. Here are a few pics of these friendly folks and their shops.

MEET JUDY.......MY FIRST TOWN FRIEND, MY FIRST SMILING CUSTOMER.

Judy is one door down from me. The name of her shop is "The Black Crow." Judy is the best... she is giving, kind and sassy (which I love)......a very good neighbor indeed.

Judy has a knack for displays....this prim, chenille snowman sits right outside her door, waiting to greet all.

Inside Judy's little shop is a cute little cupboard with eclectic gifts.

Holly is so sweet as well as her mom, Gayle, and her friend Diane. They make a great team...(who says never do busines with family and friends!) :-)

Always a time for hugs.......there's Gayle at the table and Diane is receiving one big hug from Holly.

Diane's shop is eclectic, filled with antiques and special finds. She has a good eye for all and a very sweet personality.....my first impression of her was ....what a "doll"! So when I came over with my camera to snap a few pictures, look what I found in her shop.

Tammy is the shop owner of Sawdust and Stitches. She previous ran her business in the building that I am now currently in. Her new location is in the center of town....WTG Tammy.

At the time of snapping this picture, it was starting to get dark so I had to stop and never went inside to convince Tammy that I wanted to take her picture. Hopefully, next time I am out, she will agree so that you can take a sneek peek inside with me.

TDIPT MERCANTILE SNEAK PEEK----- WOOL APPLIQUE CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS

Hello Everyone,

Its Sunday evening.....a perfect night for stitching. I completed my wool ornament projects this past week and will be offering a set of four for the Mercantile tomorrow evening....a blue and a red snowman ornament and the same goes for the snowflake.

ROAD TRIP!!!

We do plan to take a better mode of transportation so that I can get back home to open the shop. :-)

I love this picture though.

I am excited for my "business" road trip this week. My sweet husband is driving which means stitching time for me in the car. Also, I should mention that the shop will be closed Thursday and Friday this week but will be open Wednesday, Nov. 16th and Saturday, Nov. 19th.

THE SIGN OF TIMES

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick posting as I have been informed this past week (from visiting blog followers) that I never did officially post my business hours online.....actually I never thought to do so.

From the beginning of my journey with opening the store, I knew there were a few followers from Ohio, but I did not know if they lived close to Waynesville. Well....to my delight.....some do! Also, after being open for almost two months, being a sole priopriator, driving 45 minutes one way to open the shop and then home again, along with balancing my personal life... these are the hours I have decided on that seem to work for both my customers and myself.

If being closed on Monday and Tuesday seems odd, its because the whole village is closed on those days. It is considered their weekend. :-)

Today, while at the shop, I spent part of my time working on a few penny ornaments for the empty display tree in the shop window....LOL. When complete, the snowflakes will have buttons and embellishments, but this is today's progress.

NEW WOOL PATTERNS FOR WINTER STITCHING FUN

Hi Everyone,

Oh my gosh, so many new wool patterns have arrived on the market which I will be featuring in my retail shop and also on Etsy... once they arrive.....right now, most are back ordered.

Perhaps you already may know about these patterns and books, but being the wool crazy gal that I am, I just want to make sure.....lol. Here we go....

The above is a glimpse of a wonderful new book by Bonnie Sullivan and Kathy Schmitz....what a team and what a wonderful book......you will be delighted with this one.

The above four pictures are just the tip of the iceburg as Stacy West of Buttermilk Basin has given her all with many, many new patterns this year.

Such an attractive wool pincushion pattern by Renee Plains of Liberty Star. I love those pincushions....don't you?

These two patterns are by Heart to Hand. I love Kathi Campbell's style....she is always giving us wonderful projects to add to our home decor.

Please Note: These are not all the new designs that I have seen, but I chose this selection as the projects have to do with wool and would make for good winter time sewing projects. It almost makes me wish for snow, but I still bear a few scars from last winter....so can't quite wish for that one just yet..... LOL

YES, I'VE BEEN MISSING EWE! This summer has flown by and I've really missed blogging and reading all of the wonderful blogs that I follow. However, I do have a really, really good excuse or should I say that I have.....

WOOLY, WOOLY GOOD NEWS!!!

I've been a bit mischievous in keeping this news to myself...two months to be exact. My good fortune is that I've recently opened a retail "Folk Art Shop" in Waynesville, Ohio where I sell exactly what I love to do. Most of you know my addiction to wool and wool applique projects. With that being said, this is exactly what my teeny, tiny 288 sq ft shop is all about........wool applique patterns, hand dyed wool, valdani floss, handmade projects, little notions, and primitive folk art gifts. I feel a bit sheepish and perhaps a bit bashful for keeping this a secret, especially to those who know me well, but my reasoning was to make certain that all would come together in the end....I just did not want to get ahead of myself (which is easy to do in my case....lol)

This fantastic, fun, crazy, event is taking place this weekend (Oct 8th and 9th) as it's time for the 42nd Annual Sauerkraut Festival. The Sauerkraut Festival serves 7 TONS of sauerkraut and attracts approximately 350,000 visitors each year. Some of the vendors come from as far as Hawaii, Florida and California to participate.

TDIPT HAND-STITCHED WOOL APPLIQUE PENNY RUG - MAGGIE BONANOMI

Hi Everyone,

Tomorrow evening, August 14th, I will be listing a hand-stitched wool piece for the TDIPT Mercantile this evening.

The design I stitched is a "classic" by Maggie Bonanomi. I tweaked this pattern design just a wee bit. Rather than hand cutting tiny pennies to surround the entire piece, I chose to do an overlapping-triangle edging for a fun "primitive" touch. I used Aurfil Lana wool thread for all of my applique work and Valdani Size 12 (varigated) floss for the edging and trim.

I like Maggie's design as the "Penny Flowers" show dimension with the fringe cutwork. Many tiny stitches went into this piece, and I certainly enjoyed choosing the colors. The entire piece is made from 100 percent wool and the applique pieces are all hand dyed.

(2) I so enjoyed our mini vacation to central Ohio earlier this month (the Amish countryside). Pigs are one of my favorite animals. I just want to hug one! My husband rolls his eyes and laughs as he grew up on a farm as young boy and knows the reality and the true meaning of caring for pigs. :-)

I just cannot get enough of the Amish Farms and countryside. Central Ohio is gorgeous.

AURIFIL WOOL THREAD

I use this weighted wool thread quite often in my applique work. This neutral color (#8078) blends well with all colors, thus no need to keep changing your thread. It is a smooth, stitching thread that never tangles and gives a slightly aged look to all of your wool applique pieces.

I learned this tip from Shawn Williams of Threads that Bind. When I met Shawn at the International Quilt Show this past spring, she mentioned the thread to me. I told her that I was in love with it and was already using it in my work. Trust me, you will get miles and miles of applique pieces done with one spool.

WOOL YOU TAKE A LOOK?

Below is a picture showing the OBVIOUS part of the Wool Surprise Giveaway. (30 pieces of wool fabric)

This picture shows one side of my "Flip Flop" wool bundle - (15 colors). I like to interlock my wool pieces this way for storing...a good space saving trick.

Here is the other side of the "Flip Flop" wool bundle - (15 more colors). Wool fabric measurements range from 4-5 inches wide to 12-13 inches long. The wool pieces are left overs from bundles that I am preparing for my Etsy Shop. This is a hand dyed collection from Weeks Dye Works.

And now for the NOT SO OBVIOUS part of this Giveway...my little surprise.

Now, I want to make it perfectly clear that my little Sock Monkey friend stays here with me. (He is such a "stitch" though). I only put him in the picture because he is laughing at what is under the small-sized Dixie cup.

You know the old saying.... Good things come in small packages......well, this package happens to be a tiny Dixie cup and the gift underneath the cup has to do with wool....(what else is there?) lol

Yes, I did grumble some on my last post concerning the rainy months of April and May, so I snapped out of my blue mood and stitched this little wool applique piece (a Country Stitches design) for sanity purposes.

Thank goodness June has been a wonderful month. I am so happy and grateful to see the sun and to hear the birds calling out to one another.

On a different note, I also want to take this time to let you know that I am planning a FUN, FUN GIVEAWAY for MID JULY. It's my way of celebrating summer....yay! I will post all by July 1st if not sooner.

I would certainly love to hear what all of you are currently working on this month or what fun you might be having or planning.

Wool Garden Blooms

PLANTING AN INDOOR WOOL GARDEN IN OHIO....RAIN, RAIN GO AWAY!

The gray skies are getting to me today.   I think I can count on my two hands the sunny skies that we've had in the past 5 months.....obviously not many. I know it has been so hard for so many folks surviving storms, tornados, and floods.  I pray everyday for those who have lost so much.

Actually, it was three weeks ago when I thought, I don't think we are going to have that bright, sunny spring we've all been dreaming of this year.... that was my breaking point.

So on that dreary, gray, colorless day, I decided to make my own kind of sunshine with an "indoor wool garden" which I intend to plant on newly painted, colorful walls. ( This will all be happening in my sewing room). I am on a mission to color my world.  I am creating the garden with a wonderful pattern designed by Cheri Payne Saffiote titled Wool Garden.

So far, I have appliqued six flowers with nine more to go.  Fresh, colorful paint will be on the walls soon which will inspire me to work faster. :-)

Sorry Mother Nature, but I just have to move on with my "make-do" garden.

Hi Everyone,

In my last blog post, I spoke of my excitement concerning the International Quilt Show here in Cincinnati. Now, I am sitting here staring at two Primitive Quilts and Projects magazines. :-)

What happened? Apparently, I ordered one magazine from Buggy Barn a week prior to the Quilt Show. Then, while at the International Quilt Show, I signed up for a years subscription to receive the magazine. You can imagine my surprise when Buggy Barn sent the magazine to me last week.....where was my mind....how could I have forgotten? Right now, I feel a bit pathetic, but I am hoping that if I give this fantastic magazine to someone who loves all folk art projects, then I just might forgive myself for my "short-term" memory. :-)

Spring weather has arrived here in Cincinnati, OHIO. Today is that perfect, beautiful day! Memories of winter seem far away. I hope you are enjoying your day also.

INTERNATIONAL QUILT MARKET - THREADS THAT BIND

New Wool Applique Patterns by Threads That Bind

Last week, I was fortunate enough to be able to visit and shop the International Quilt Show held here in Cincinnati, Ohio. Actually, I'm still revved up about all. The show was beautiful. Very, very exciting. Very, very colorful.

I had six specific designer booths that I did not want to miss for certain.

The first booth I found on my list was Shawn Williams of Threads That Bind. I was thrilled as she had such a beautiful, warm, inviting booth with all of her finished pieces on display. There was a model for each pattern that she has designed. When I first spotted her, I found her working away at a punchneedle project, showing visitors who stopped by what she was doing, answering questions, and so forth. I stopped and stayed as I have never tackled a punchneedle project. I adore the look and have all the supplies and yet.... have never sat down to figure it all out.

You know, sometimes procrastinating is a good thing because I never thought (in my wildest dreams) that I would learn the technique of punchneedle from designer Shawn Williams. I just about had a heart attack, but I managed to play it cool. (I think) :-) She shared so much and answered all of my curious questions. I just can't say enough about this wonderful designer. She definitely has her own brand of style, and its a style I have adored for years. Her work is meticulous and colorful. I bought two wool applique kits from her (pictured above...these are her new patterns for 2011). She also has several new punchneedle patterns. What a wonderful time!

Another super fun booth was Auntie Ju's. She had a nice variety of quilt displays and wool applique. I also found some lovely hand dyed wool fabric. As you can see, from the picture, I purchased a pattern and kit from her. (Designer: Country Stitches - Pattern: Halloween Sampler Table Runner). She tempted me with the adorable one she made for her booth. I couldn't let this rest and had to buy the kit.

The other booths on my list were Country Threads, Primitive Gatherings, From my Heart to your Hands, and Mary Flanagan. Next year, if the show is here, I plan to purchase a weekend pass and not a one day pass. I learned my lesson there.

TDIPT SNEEK PEEK LISTINGS:

Punchneedle turned Wool Applique....LOL SOLD - THANK YOU!

Yes, I took a punchneedle design by Country Stitches and turned it into an applique piece. You know me and my wooly ways. I love the design, but had not meet Shawn Williams at the time of choosing this project for my TDIPT listing. So with my desire to know punchneedle, I satisfied my itch by tweeking the pattern to a wool applique piece. My talented husband made the hornbook board for me. I painted and aged the piece with gel stain. It was a fun project and something different.

Garden Walk Table Mat SOLD - THANK YOU!

This table mat design by Primitive Gatherings gave me a chance to work with my "wool scrap stash" (try saying that fast 3 times in a row).

I so enjoyed working on this piece. This project kept me sane this week as I sat in my sewing room (downstairs) this week listening to the sawing and hammering upstairs. Here is a pic of what is going on inside my house right now, but it is coming to an end soon. I'm not so sure about the dust though. So far, I've blocked all out of my mind and will think about that over the weekend....maybe....lol

The only piece we couldn't get out of the room was the couch in the corner of picture. Really heavy. Has to be lifted over a stair rail to be removed from room. No one wanted that job, so the installer said he could work around the piece. Its snugged up tight in plastic. I was so happy to see the carpet gone yesterday. It appears much brighert now. Happy Days!

Yes, a true, fun, traditional Cincinnati Holiday..... RED'S OPENING DAY.  How lucky we were to have tickets this year.  It was nonstop from morning till evening, and we enjoyed all the festivities the city had to offer.

We started the day watching the Findley Market parade. I was hoping to see the large elephants from the zoo march down the street like I've seen in the past, but I think the weather was just too cold this year.

The Red's won their game.....a last minute win so it was quite a thrill for all.

These pics are from my husbands' Blackberry phone. The day was cold, yet it never seemed to bother us much.

Just thought I would share......to prove that I can (now and then) get through the day with out needle, thread and fabric. LOL

WOOL SCRAP BOX/PATTERN GIVEAWAY, April 1, 2011 / DYEING WOOL WITH AN INDUCTION BURNER

Hi Everyone.

I hope you are all doing well and that you are excited about seeing signs of spring in your garden along with warmer temperatures.

Since we've all endured the harsh winter months of 2011, I believe a true celebration is in order. I'm thinking a wool scrap giveaway box with pattern and notepad. (a garden theme).

This morning, I gathered some wool scraps and started to fill a small flat rate shipping box. I topped it off with a pattern titled Wool Garden Crazy by designer Jan Speed along with a small garden notepad for jotting down thoughts and ideas for your next wool project. I can barely close the small flat rate shipping box so I am satisfied and its ready for a home. :-)

So my sewing friends, the rules are simple. If you are already a Follower, you're in. If you are not a Follower, sign up so that I can draw your name. This will be a random draw and I will post the winner's name the morning of April 1st in this blog.

WOOL DYEING WITH INDUCTION BURNER

Next I wanted to share a different way to dye wool. I know some worry about dyeing wool in their kitchens. I definitely was one of those people so I did a little research on Amazon. And yes, there on Amazon, I discovered induction burners. I noted in one of the the reviews that a customer was using the induction burner for dyeing wool. That thought got into my head and so I eventually ordered one for myself. I cannot say enough good about this burner and how easy it is to dye wool this way. For example, if you have a laundry room with sink and would prefer to dye wool in that room, all you need is the light weight induction burner, a table, and an outlet. A very simple way to get the job done. Here are a few pics to give you the idea.

I have my burner sitting on a cart that has a formica top, but any table will do. Heat is only generated when the metal pot sits on top. The settings are easy to understand and the heat is easily controlled.

Example of an enamel metal pot that I use. White is good for dyeing so that you can monitor the color of water and color of wool.

Using a dark color this time around. Good for branches and tree trunks.

This past weekend, we couldn't wait any longer, and took a weekend to ourselves.

My husband and I never have to ponder long about where we are going. We always agree and drive straight to the "Amish Country" in Holmes County, Ohio. We spent two days antique shopping, quilt shopping, and driving through the beautiful countryside. It is so restful with such peaceful scenery.

FELTED WOOL FROM DORR MILL

I spent most of this past weekend felting this wonderful bundle of wool that I purchased from the Dorr Mill Store the first of January.

In case you didn't know, the Dorr Mill Store offers a nice discount on their wool starting the beginning of January. I believe it runs for a couple of weeks. Be sure to mark this event on your calendar for next year. I take advantage of this sale every year for stocking up on plain woolens for hand dyeing and base fabric woolens for my applique work.

After reading Cheri's blog, I was inspired and pull out my "Sweet Land of Liberty" Quilt project. I had set the project down earlier this year, thinking... I would get back to it soon. Well, that never happened, BUT I did get back on board this November and have completed four more blocks....needless to say I am excited.

This is my first quilt project and because I am so in love with all of Cheri's designs, I figure where there is a will there has to be a way. :-)

Cheri's wonderful primitive folk art style shows me that it can all work and be very forgiving at the same time. Her patterns challenge me to research different techniques that might help me along the way. Also, recently, I purchased a fabulous new quilt book from Better Homes and Gardens titled "Complete Guide to Quilting." I call this book my "visual teacher", loads of pictures, an absolute must have quilt book....at least that is what this rookie seems to think. :-)

Today, I noticed on Buttermilk Basin's blog one of Cheri's favorite quotes:

"Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new."

A great thought for me, as I move forward with this project and for anyone else new to quilting.

I wanted to touch base with everyone on a project that I have been working on for awhile. I have a very patient customer who requested this piece and is waiting for me to ship it to her. She so loved the ghosts on this extra large penny rug pattern (designer Shawn Williams of Threads That Bind) and that is how it all started. We discussed the pattern and she decided to order. (So yes this piece is sold and thank you Janus). :-)

My first thought was.... whoa... this is one huge penny rug! BUT....then I thought, I can't wait to start! So my challenge began and I enjoyed every moment in stitching this piece.

The main purpose of this short blog is to let you know that sometimes the more challenging projects will become your favorites. I usually am able to detach and say goodbye to my creations, but this one will be be a little harder. ( Don't worry Janus.....I promise to send it to you.)

So, as I am putting this blog together, I am thinking about our beautiful fall weather and Halloween approaching which reminds me of my all time favorite TV show from the past, Bewitched. Some of you may remember this show and some of you may be too young, but anyway I got to thinking about the characters in the show like hilarious Uncle Arthur, demanding Endora, and my favorite character, Aunt Clara, who collected door knobs. I loved Aunt Clara's sweet personality and as a kid, I was completely fascinated with her door knob collection. Now that I am an adult, I am wondering if I too have become Aunt Clara? I'm laughing as I a have sizeable collection of wooden bobbins and glass candlestick stands. I started collecting these pieces a couple of years ago for creating "make do" projects. (I love the primitive pieces that sit a top of bobbins and candlesticks.)

So I have a question for all of you...do you have a quirky collection that you just love? I would be interested in hearing what you have to say! Wool Hand Dyed Fabric Collection (Patterns and Textures) - My Tiny Corner of the World

Hi Everyone,

Hope you are enjoying your summer and feeling rested as fall is right around the corner. There are so many shows, festivals, and events that come with this time of the year that I look forward to..... and of course better weather. Here in Ohio, we have been stuck in a heat wave with high humidity. I have been painting and staining my new stand for the upcoming shows in our garage, and nothing seems to dry. At least I have one more month to get it done. :-)

With this blog, I thought I would share some pictures of my wool collection. I collect wool like "fabricholics" collect fat quarters for their quilt projects. I also have set myself up to dye my own wool. Sooo much going on, but always a good time.

If, by chance, you are interested in adding to your wool collection, there are many, many wonderful ladies who dye wool at reasonable prices. The wonderful Internet can bring up many choices of dyers along with the folks from Etsy and eBay.

This collection has been dyed by The Merry Hooker. She did a beautiful job and this amount of wool will keep me busy with applique projects for next year's shows.

July? That is my simple question. Summer has been simply wonderful, but passing ever too fast.

I am still working feveriously on show items. Above is one of my latest projects. The pattern is from Country Stitches. Brenda Gervais' designs always have a way of capturing my heart, especially when acorns are involved.

Hello Everyone!

I hope everyone is enjoying their well-earned summer. It is beautiful here in Cincinnati with so many events to go to each and every weekend. This weekend is Summer Fair on Coney Island. A fantastic art show! http://www.summerfair.org/

Well, we are back from vacation and we enjoyed each and every day. Almost too rested as it was somewhat difficult to fall back into the schedules and demands of everyday life.

While on vacation, I was able to complete a few projects. I am thinking fall/autumn right now so I assembled this Redware Mat (pattern by Primitive Gatherings). I couldn't wait to do this one so I could try out my new Valdani Threads. These little floss spools are to "dye" for (little pun) as the threads are colorfast and hand dyed. All of the wool used in this piece was hand dyed with the exception of the background. I also found black-packaged flannel binding for the edges. It feels as soft as the wool.

Since my last posting, I have started an Etsy Store where I sell primitive folk art patterns, wool applique and penny rug patterns, Valdani Floss Cotton Spools (Size 12) in sets of 28 (in case as shown), and eventually my handmade pieces. In the meantime, I am creating and sewing for the upcoming shows listed in the sidebar. Time is going by way to fast. I have to move faster....I am LOL as a type this as I think of my favorite show (as a kid) "Bewitched" and wish I knew how to use those powers in my favor. Wool Applique Owl Ornament IT'S A HOOT!

Thank you for stopping by and viewing my blogspot. As I type, I am wondering how the month of April flew by so fast. I have been working feverishly on product for 2010 shows. So much to do, so much to look forward to. I just added my last show confirmation (Lakota West High School) to the left side bar.

Below is a pic of owl ornaments that I finished last night. Each year I seem to have new folk art favorites. This year is the owl, squirrel and (of course) the acorn.

We are off to Topsail Island, NC during the month of May for an early vacation. There, we enjoy the comforts of an oceanfront cottage where we totally relax and enjoy our surroundings. This will be our 5th year.....we seem to be drawn back each and every year. Here is the visual reason why we keep going back for more.

Wool Applique Penny Rug Projects

I loved the uniquess of this project. Had to take pictures in three sections.

Getting ready for Fall Shows

This was a bargin and would like to share my idea with everyone. I purchased this wool felted, nylon lined pencil case at Hobby Lobby in the NeedleArt Department with the weekly 40% off coupon. I was looking for something unique to hold my business cards at shows. I ended up spending a whole $4.00 because of coupon. As pictured above, I personalized it with scraps of wool and wool felt. I keep every scrap of wool from projects...they always come in handy. I appliqued the case with a basic straight stitch. The zippered case comes with a felted wool ball that is attached to the closure to aid in zipping and unzipping. I had intended on putting my initials on case, but used my nick name instead. New Addition to Blog. I have added my 2010 Show List on the sidebar. I will keep adding to list as the confirmations come in.

Also, I will post in April the continuing project of "Sweet Land of Liberty" quilt by pattern designer Cheri Payne Saffiote. I just love her quaint, folk art, primitive designs....they are just wild and fun.

Also, my husband has just obtained a larger wood working spot for his creations.... (ohhh, is he excited). Now that the weather is warmer, he will continue to create "those wooden boxes"...LOL. The boxes I am talking about have two drawers and they remind me of a DMC floss box. The main idea is that the drawers are sized for holding skeins of floss or wool scraps. They are table top sized. The pics will be coming soon.

I think I will have to stop over to see if the drawers are suitable for the DMC and Valdani spools AND SPEAKING OF THAT, I just received my Valdani order of 12 wt floss on spools. These threads are stunning and will be perfect for applique work. I can't wait to use them. If you are interested in viewing the Valdani threads, a great website is Primitive Gatherings. I have picked up a new project that I would like to share if you are interested in quilting, especially if you embrace the folk art-primitive look.

So far, I have found this project to be completely fascinating, educating and challenging. Did I mention I am not a quilter......piecing, freezer paper, 1/4 seam allowances....what??? LOL. I think it is going well so far. The true blessing about this type of project is that primitive folk art is suppose to look a bit inexperience, naive, loved, crooked, and so forth. See how I can get my mind to make it right? LOL

I will be working on block 5 in March. I anticipate for the quilt top to be done by Dec 2010 which will include the border.

February Projects

Hi Everyone....Yeah...its February!! We are not seeing much sunshine here in Ohio...patiently waiting though.

The above pictures are "bits and pieces" of a table runner that I am working on.....it is larger than I thought it would be and that is a good thing. Almost done and plan to add one more border! The good thing about winter is that it provides me time for stocking up for shows. However, I think I need to do smaller projects if I am going to stock up....LOL.

My husband is anxiously awaiting for spring so that he can use his "Storage Shop" for the projects he left off with in the fall. (I will post pics of his designs in a few months). He has designed and built several variations of wooden boxes with drawers for holding skeins of floss, fabric scraps (or in my case wool scraps), needles, pins, quilting supplies, etc. The boxes are nice and I will be selling those at my shows also.

Hand Stitched Wool Applique

As we start thinking about filing our taxes and facing our post holiday expenses, I have to admit that I have a soft spot in my heart for the month of January. It reminds me of my wishful heart when I was young....praying and hoping for those snow days....the good old days.

This is also the time of year when I start planning for my art/craft shows. I live in the state of Ohio where there are many shows to choose from. So far I have signed up for A Wool Gathering held in Yellow Springs, Ohio and for an art/craft show held in the historic village of Mariemont Ohio. I currently only have the link for A Wool Gathering Show.

The above pictured piece (JANUARY) is a small appliqued wool table mat. I made the monthly mat series last year as a small reminder that each and every month is special in its own way.....it doesn't always have to be a holiday to be special. The pattern is a stitchery pattern from Buttermilk Basin (Designer Stacy West) that I turned into a wool applique piece.

The other picture is a large wool appliqued piece entitled "Visions of Sugar Plums." This hand stitched piece is a pattern from designers "All Through The Night." In fact, if you scroll down this blog you will see my favorite websites (on the right side) where there is a link for "All Through the Night." She has wonderful, detailed patterns listed on her site. If you sew, you will want to view her products.

During the month of January 2010, I am teaching myself the process of hand dyeing my own wool pieces. I have a wonderful, wonderful book to help me by Laurice Heath called "BEAUTIFUL WOOL" - A Hand-Dyer's Guide. This is the book of all books. If you can get your hands on this book, you will have a gem in your hand. I highly recommend.

Well, it is time to wind down for the day, but wanted to get my first blog finished. I have many more ideas, tutorials, and free patterns to share with you. In the past, I have always appreciated my art show customers comments, compliments, and ideas. I hope to hear from you too! Sharing our thoughts, ideas and talents with one another leads to an enriched soul and an enriched life.
